Smart FTP-a little help please... |
I've tried downloading Smart FTP a couple times, once off this site and once off the etree home page.I never get the screen that is shown in the Smart set up example where you chose retrys, and with the general tab etc. I get a screen that is called Smart FTP V.1 Unlicenced. I can put in the FTP server but there is no dialog box for directory info. It has FTP in the first upper left hand corner. Anyone out there know what I'm doing wrong? It does ask me what folder I want it set up in, and the whole setup looks correct, the end result isn't right though. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

On each details page, there is a link to see which server and which folder the recording is on (FTP Information). Find that out. For example, let's say the recording you want is on the server named audio06.archive.org, in the /2/audio folder.
1. Open SmartFTP.
2. In the address field, fill in
audio06.archive.org
3. Click on the check-box all the way to the right that says
Anonymous
4. Click on the
Connect button (just below the FTP menu)
5. When the directory structure loads after connecting, click on "2" in the lefthand pane.
6. Click on "Audio"
7. Find the recording you want to download, click on it (still in the left pane). The right pane will show you the audio files to download.
8. Highlight all the files you want by holding down the CTRL button on your keyboard and clicking on them 1 by 1.
9. Let go of the CTRL button.
10. Right click on 1 of the highlighted files, select Download > Direct > Select Folder.
Abracadabra. Files are downloading and can be resumed if you disconnect.
For the experts, I recommend playing with the "Global Queue" feature to make this even easier (it allows you to queue up a ton of files and walk away knowing it will automatically reconnect as needed), and the "Selection Groups" feature (hot keys to highlight all the filetypes you want).

Had to turn off firwall, then found the left pane hidden behind the first screen. Once I highlight the songs I want, can I select download all at once or do I have to wait for the first song to download before selecting the next song. So far, leaps ahead of where I was yesterday. As usual, thatnk you and the staff at LMA.

Yes. If they are all highlighted when you right click and select download, it will download all of them 1 at a time (when the first track finishes, it starts the next one)
To make it even easier, try using the "Global Queue" feature.
Right click on a file > Download > Global Queue > Select Destination
It won't look like it did anything initially, but it adds the file to a list of items to download. To see the list and manage it, click on:
View > Toolbars > Transfers > Global Queue tab
Hitting the play button starts the transfer. You can drag/drop to change the order of the files you want to download. If you get disconnected for some reason during a transfer from this list, SmartFTP will wait a minute or so and then automatically reconnect.

Now that they are downloaded, Nero isn't reading them. They show up as compressed audio (shorten)with the music note on each song. Do i have to run them thru MKW? I thought this replaced that process. Unzipping does not appear to be an option.Was I supposed to chose the file off audio22 that had the zip icon in front of the show?So close, maybe I have brain freeze.

i don't burn w/ nero. but you most likely need to convert the shorten files to audio if you want to burn a cdr to listen to in your cd player. using mkwACT is an easy way to do this. you can listen to shn files on your pc w/ winamp.

ok, i re-read your post. the reason we use ftp software is so we don't need to d/l 1 track at a time thru a website. so learn how to use smartftp since that is what you have. it is what i use and i have never had a problem with it.
2ndly - you are d/l shorten (.shn) files, NOT audio files. the reason we d/l shn or flac files is because they are about half the size of audio files and have built-in checks to make sure they are bit-for-bit perfect clones of what was seeded. i do not know if any cdr burning software automatically decodes shn into audio for you. but mkwACT is very reliable and the easiest software i use. if yours isn't working, i recommend using your computer's uninstall feature and remove mkwACT. then d/l it again and install it again. it will take 5 minutes to do both and then you should be ready to burn. good luck.

If you are downloading .SHN files, you must run them thru mkwact to decode them before you can burn them to disks (I don't believe CD burning utilities such as Nero or Roxio Easy CD Creator contain any SHN decoders)
If you are downloading zip files, you must unzip them into the SHNs, then run them thru mkwact
After downloading and/or unzipping to SHN, use the Verify option (after installing mkwact, right-click an SHN file with the mouse and you'll see the Verify option in the menu) to check out your d/l i.e. to ensure there's no file corruption.
Also, in mkwact, go to the File | Options menu. Uncheck the setting to delete input SHN files (it's a good idea to save the source files until the disk is successfully burned).

I thought going thru FTP avoided having to compress. I was having problems with my MKW tool in that it didn't decode the files, so I was looking for an alternative. Need to spend a little more time, one of the other posts related to me downloading audio files and not shn. I'll check back when I get a moment later. Thanks.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is merely a method of transmitting data between computers on a network, it has nothing to do with file compression. Compression reduces the size of the files so that they d/l quicker, thus saving bandwidth and disk storage ;)

I thought FTP was a faster and/or cleaner and or simpler process. Download time seemed similar to downloading whole shows by lossless and I still have to run it thru MKW. The only step that may have been eliminated is unzipping it. Is this correct or am I missing something like quality? Thanks in advance for all of your combined assistance.

It's cleaner. Resuming is much more reliable, chances of corruption are much smaller, and the FTP client gives you a lot more options over how you want to download stuff.

Brad- I just want to confirm that I still have to compress the files with MKW or similar compression tool.Also, when D/L the Dead, it appeared there was an option to do the whole show, but it had the clamp/vice logo associated with a zip file. Does that matter, or is choosing the songs seperately without the "clamp"the cleanest approach? You know-thanks!

Yes. You will still need to decompress with mkwACT or FLAC Frontend when you are done downloading them. This is apparent when you look at the file extension:
*.shn = decompress with mkwACT.
*.flac = decompress with FLAC Frontend.
*.wav = no decompression necessary.
*.zip = unzip first, then compare to above 3.

Actually, there's a SHN plugin for Nero, specifically. Try this link:

Additionally, the page lists several other plugins, including one for FLAC, although if you have nero installed prior to running it, the current version of the FLAC front-end installer [
